Thai Basil Smash

A Fun Twist on a Classic Cocktail

A smash is a very versatile cocktail with a lot of options to make it your own. It should include ice, although that can mean simply shaking the drink with ice. A smash should also include fruit, in this case limes. And finally, there needs to be a spirit as the base, in this case bourbon. I make this Thai Basil Smash special by muddling Thai basil leaves with the limes in addition to adding homemade Thai Basil Simple Syrup to sweeten the drink.

Why Thai Basil?

I originally grew Thai basil in my garden a few years ago on a whim and really enjoyed its special spiciness. So, when I recently started an indoor garden, one of the first plants I started was Thai basil. One of the best ways to pull flavor out of basil is by ripping or crushing it, which means muddling it into this smash cocktail is just perfect. Muddling both crushes and rips the basil leaves, releasing all of their tasty oils into the drink.

How to Make a Thai Basil Smash

A Thai Basil Smash is a very easy drink to make. Slice one lime into 4 wedges and muddle with the Thai basil leaves in a shaker. Then add the rest of the ingredients into the shaker with some ice and shake it up. One recommendation for straining: use a fine mesh strainer if you don’t want any pieces of basil in your drink. The muddling process and shaking with ice really tear apart the basil leaves. Personally I don’t mind a few bits of basil leaves in my drink, but if you do, keep this in mind.

Make this Cocktail your Own

As I mentioned before, a smash cocktail is very loosely defined and endlessly customizable. I centered this recipe around Thai basil and my Thai basil simple syrup, but that leaves a lot of room for changes. Instead of limes, use lemons, oranges, or even strawberries. Strawberry and basil is a classic combination and would muddle together very well.

If you don’t have access to Thai basil, you could substitute in sweet basil. You’ll miss the spiciness of the Thai basil, but your drink will still be delicious. You could even go so far as to substitute in mint, but then your drink is getting closer to a mint julep. So make this recipe as written with Thai basil or make it your own and enjoy!
