All about this Healthy Meatloaf
This hearty comfort dish harkens back to family meals from my childhood, but with two twists: it’s calorie conscious and has a zesty German flair!
What I love about this healthy meatloaf is that its quick to prepare, doesn’t use a ton of dishes or cutting boards, meaty and high protein, and all while staying low calorie!
My family’s meatloaf was always a winner; it was moist, filling, and paired well with any number of sides and vegetables. As we grow our own household, I always want to recreate those happy feelings. At the same time, as we move into spring and summer, I want to manage calorie intake and slim down.
Ground turkey is an easy substitute for a beef meatloaf, though we tend to be picky about which ground turkey we use. For years I used inexpensive frozen ground turkey that was never quite right. We primarily use Jeannie-O turkey from Costco. I find it cooks well, and has a nice texture and consistency.
By switching to Turkey we can serve a healthy portion of meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and a dinner roll for around 500 calories per person! The meal is high protein too, with 37 grams of protein per serving. With high protein, and a starchy side like potatoes, you’ll be left happy and full.
About the Curry Ketchup
The meatloaf’s flavor is amped up by our use of curry ketchup. At its core, it’s very similar to regular ketchup, just with added curry powder, sweetness, and heat from paprika and cayenne. The end product is both spicy and sweet, and quite frankly delicious anywhere you’d apply regular ketchup. Of course you can substitute regular ketchup into this meatloaf if preferred.
We learned about curry ketchup while touring Berlin in 2019. Currywurst is a popular street food in Berlin, where currywurst sausage is served over fries and drenched in curry ketchup. It’s a great late night meal after drinking and wandering around Brandenburg gate at the Pariser Platz 🙂

How to prepare Healthy Meatloaf with Curry Ketchup

Add your ingredients to a mixing bowl. Hold back about half of the curry ketchup to top with. Mix until well combined.

Pour the meatloaf into a baking pan, we’re using an L x W x H pan. Smooth to a flat even thickness. If you’re using beef, I recommend adding a drip tray first, but for ground turkey its really unnecessary.
Coat the top of the meatloaf with the remaining curry ketchup.

Bake at 350F for 55-65 minutes.
That’s all there is to it! Be careful not to overbake as turkey can dry out. We served ours with mashed potatoes, dinner rolls, and extra curry ketchup for dipping.
